CHAPTER TEN

Jeremiah strode into the house just as the sun was starting to rise. His muscles ached and dirt covered every inch of his body. He wanted a shower… Bad. He made his way straight to the bathroom, not stopping for anything else. Water shot from the showerhead as he cranked it on and stepped into it without even waiting for it to warm.

After witnessing what happened between James and Marshall, he ran up the mountain and didn't stop. It was all he could do when he saw Marshall grab him, not to run out and beat the guy to a pulp. He hadn't even meant to growl, but was glad he did. When Marshall finally left, Jeremiah didn't dare go close to James. Overwhelming jealousy would have caused him to do things that he had no right doing yet. He wanted to claim him and spend the night covering him in his scent. Of course that was his other side speaking, the human inside him knew that taking things slow was the only way to earn James's trust and make something out of their relationship that was lasting.

Suds washed down the drain as he rinsed his hair, taking the dirt and stress of the night away with it. He needed sleep, but couldn't seem to shut down his mind to get there. He turned off the water with more force than he needed, and quickly dried off before stumbling naked to the kitchen and making himself a pot of coffee. As he sat down to wait for it to brew, he reached for his cell phone. His heart skipped as he saw a missed call from James, but then worry quickly set in when he saw the time. Praying everything was okay, he hit the button and listened to the voicemail.

He closed his eyes as he listened, trying to gauge what was wrong. James sounded tired, but there was something more, something he was not saying.

Forgetting about the coffee, Jeremiah dressed quickly, and drove to James's house, stopping for two coffees and breakfast at a local fast food place. As he pulled into the driveway, and stepped out of his truck, he inhaled deep, finding James's scent strongest toward the shed. He carried the food with him as he stuck his head into the shed, finding James asleep, his head resting on his workbench.

Quietly, he set the coffee and food down, and softly grasped James's shoulder. "Hey, wake up. You're going to get a stiff neck."

James didn't respond, so Jeremiah tried again. He wished he had the guts to lean over and kiss him awake. Instead, he shook him again. "James, wake up. I brought you coffee."

James stirred, and slowly sat up. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand as he sat back and looked up at Jeremiah. "Oh, hey. I must have fallen asleep working."

"How long you been in here?"

"Since I called you. I couldn't sleep. I thought about going to sleep a bit ago, but I just wanted to finish with his eyes.
